Harry Says, "Come Celebrate Palm Sunday"
PSALM 118:19-29
By Pastor Leid with credit to Matthew Henry Commentary.
This week is one of the most outstanding, if not the most outstanding week, in the history of the Christian Church. I do not know of a week that has more ups and downs than this week. From exaltation to rejection is the view of the Savior, Jesus Christ.
This week had no surprises for God. People were surprised, but God was not surprised as He knew the plans hundreds of years before the events occurred. In Psalm 118, we see a twofold meaning to the Scripture. The first is as it relates to David, and the second is looking down the ages through prophecy to Jesus Christ.
We can zero in a little closer and see in verses 22 and 23, “The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.” This shows that the rejection of the Christ appeared to be a great setback for Jesus, but we must remember that God notes the days of pleasure as well as the painful ones. God is with you on Monday morning just as much as He was with you on Sunday morning.
Rejecting the cornerstone by the Jewish people led to their being left outside the Temple of the Living Body of Jesus Christ. How sad that an act of rejection could have such fatal consequences. When they rejected Christ, they also rejected God.
Christ is so amazing. We humans could never react in the way He reacted to this rejection. He did not pout or murmur because of the rejection because He already knew what was coming next. We are limited to the past and present, but He has unlimited viewing of the future.
The future for Christ was to become “the Capstone of the Church of Jesus Christ” of the future. Fast forward to today and we can see all the benefits that have come to us from this rejection to Coronation. The difference is that we have never quit rejoicing since we found this wonderful Savior as our personal Savior. We are not among the crowd of rejecters, but we are among the builders of the future. We are building the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. Every time we lead someone to accept Jesus Christ we build on the “Capstone Jesus Christ.” The amazing thing is that He can take the weight of everyone in the world on His shoulders, and still have room for more people to come to the foot of the cross.
Like the Psalmist, let us praise God for all of this. It is marvelous in our eyes. Let us thank God for his everlasting covenant of grace and mercy that has been shown to us through Jesus Christ.
